All three products in SAP HANA Cloud Services – SAP HANA Cloud, SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, and SAP Analytics Cloud – connect to and complement each other. But the relationship between SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and SAP HANA Cloud is particularly special.
SAP Data Warehouse Cloud uses SAP HANA Cloud as its primary database technology and leverages its virtualization, persistence, and data tiering capabilities as well as its powerful database core. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud then builds on this with semantics, advanced data modeling, and SQL querying features.
The thing is, these SAP HANA Cloud features aren't exclusive to SAP Data Warehouse Cloud; they're available to everyone who builds their app on SAP HANA Cloud.
Let's take a detailed look at why we built SAP Data Warehouse Cloud on SAP HANA Cloud and what you get when if you decide to create your app on SAP HANA Cloud.
An Open Cloud
SAP HANA Cloud is a cloud DBaaS product [read our blog post about on-prem or cloud for more on this]. Anything built on top of it gets all the benefits of the cloud, like high availability, elasticity, and low total cost of ownership.
SAP HANA Cloud gives SAP Data Warehouse Cloud customers the elasticity to distribute cloud computing resources efficiently to save money. If your computing or storage needs change, the cloud can be quickly scaled up, down, or even suspended. There's no setup or installation, and SAP, as your SaaS provider, will take care of updates and maintenance.
SAP HANA Cloud is open and can connect to all applications, whether they're from SAP, customized in-house, or a third party. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is also an open product that can connect to any application or data source, whether it's on-premise or in the cloud. Both SAP HANA Cloud and SAP Date Warehouse Cloud provide customers with an end-to-end view of their data landscape that is trusted, secure, and actionable. Everything is secured and private with enterprise-grade cloud data protection.
A Data Lake
SAP HANA Cloud is a game-changer when it comes to managing business data in modern environments. It's data tiering means you can move your data between the native storage extension, in-memory, and the relational data lake.
Data stored in memory is available in real-time with low latency. As the data becomes less of a priority, you can move it down to the native storage extension. This option is more cost-effective and still has very low latency.
Then comes SAP HANA Cloud's relational data lake. It combines the massive storage capacity of a data lake – up to the petabyte scale – while keeping it all within a relational database structure that simplifies and accelerates data analysis. The SAP HANA Cloud relational data lake ensures that SAP Date Warehouse Cloud can rapidly access data despite massive data volumes.
With its data tiers, SAP HANA Cloud offers a broad choice of where to store data to achieve the optimal cost to performance ratio. It automatically manages data distribution and access across its native memory and disk storage options. No matter where you store your data, it can be accessed through a single access layer, and its location is always transparent.
SAP Data Warehouse Cloud and SAP HANA Cloud are a single source of truth for all data, transactional and analytical, structured and unstructured, across on-premise and cloud.
SAP HANA Cloud lets SAP Data Warehouse Cloud connect with other data points, regardless of whether they're remote, local, or in different formats. Plus, because SAP Data Warehouse Cloud leverages SAP HANA Cloud's Smart Data Integration (SDI) technology, anyone can add custom adapters if they want to connect to something that's not supported out of the box. For example, adapters make connecting Facebook data or Twitter data easy. In the end, customers will have a single table with all their data, no matter where the data is stored.
