How Randstad Creates a Connected Data Landscape

For Randstad, data is the backbone of their mission of providing staffing solutions to companies. However, working with hundreds of thousands of people and a multitude of channels can lead to a cacophony of data. Find out how Randstad uses SAP Data Warehouse Cloud to create a connected data landscape and generate invaluable business insights.

For more than 50 years, Netherlands-based Randstad has helped people and organizations realize their true potential. This leader in the human resource services industry connects companies with the right talent, whether it's on a temporary or permanent basis.

Data drives everything that Randstad does, from recruiting talent to tracking big-picture hiring trends in a region. Data helps Randstad make decisions confidently. It drives the company's commitment to maximizing employment rates. With data at the forefront of every strategic decision, Randstad trusts SAP Data Warehouse Cloud to gain important insights.

"SAP Data Warehouse Cloud enables us to bring all our data together to create a real end-to-end analytical solution. These capabilities give us power to make the most of our data."
Andreas Förger, Manager of Analytics and Reporting at Randstad

DEFINING THE DATA PROBLEM

At Randstad, relevant data comes in many different forms. There's Salesforce, SAP BW, social media (Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook), and even data from government sources, such as Germany's Federal Ministry of Labor. This data is spread across various cloud and on-premise data sources.

Randstad's existing data management setup simply wasn't doing what they needed it to do. For starters, not all of the data was consolidated in one place. Also, Randstad had to use an expensive third-party adaptor to sync some — but not all — of their data sources.

For business users, this setup also wasn't working. It's the business users that need to access the data in order to unlock hidden insights that can shape Randstad's short and long-term strategy. However, this complex setup was a challenge. The interface of the product was unintuitive and complicated, which slowed down business users. These users wanted something easy to use — they wanted true self-service capabilities.

If Randstad was going to accomplish all this, they wanted to make sure that they could use their existing resources — such as BW — and avoid rebuilding all their complex authorization models. These models have proven to be extremely effective and recreating them would be a duplication of what they already accomplished.

Another important objective was to cut down on data redundancy as much as possible and not just move everything into the cloud. They wanted to "connect" to their data, and not just "collect" it.

DELIVERING INSIGHTS THAT MATTER

SAP Data Warehouse Cloud enabled Randstad to create end-to-end visibility of their data landscape. Thanks to the virtualization capabilities of SAP Data Warehouse Cloud, Randstad could connect their sources without creating redundancies or persisting data.

These different sources were combined and modeled in a way that made sense to business users with the semantic layer. This feature synced all data so it could be easily used by business users.

Randstad's adoption of SAP Data Warehouse Cloud went smoothly. The intuitive interface combined with the high performance both helped drive adoption. One of the other benefits was that this solution built off the company's existing experience with SAP Analytics Cloud.

"Data has always shaped our strategy, but now it's accessible as soon as we need it."
Andreas Förger, Manager of Analytics and Reporting at Randstad

With all this data synchronized, business users can now dive in to get sophisticated insights. For example, Randstad can see the complete lifecycle of a client they helped get hired. By looking at everything from the first point of contact to the client's current status, they can determine exactly what marketing channels offer the best ROI in their recruitment efforts.

The new setup allows users to go as granular as they'd like down to a single hire. Or, they can step back and take a big-picture look to find overarching economic trends for a specific region based on hiring patterns. Users can write SQL queries, run simulations or create reports as they please.

All this work is accomplished through SAP Data Warehouse Cloud's powerful Spaces feature. Spaces, created for different teams and business units, provide access to only relevant data. These spaces are secured and governed, but also completely customizable in terms of authorizations.

REACHING DATA-DRIVEN GOALS

Randstad set out to create a connected data landscape with a few key conditions in place. They wanted to build off their existing resources, limit data redundancy, and most importantly of all, give self-service capabilities to their business users.

SAP Data Warehouse Cloud provided solutions to all these problems. Now, the data is connected in a way that can be easily leveraged by business users.

"Most [other vendors] are not enterprise-ready solutions. SAP Data Warehouse Cloud is an enterprise-grade cloud data warehouse that is designed with both IT and business in mind – that's the difference and that's why it's effective."
Andreas Förger, Manager of Analytics and Reporting, Randstad
